NEW YORK — The popularity of barer looks has turned laser hair removal into one of the fastest-growing nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in recent years, with more than 1.3 million performed in 2005. But consumers also have a growing variety of options for at-home hair removal. Two recent additions to the field include the new Nads Hair Removal Essentials Kit from LifeSource, and a new line of Veet depilatory creams and waxes from Reckitt Benckiser Inc. Veet is stressing personalization with its hair-removal gel creams, which come in three formulations for dry, normal or sensitive skin. Veet Ready to Use Wax Strips, meanwhile, come in resin-based formulations for normal-to-dry skin, and a sugar-based wax designed to reduce the potential for irritation on sensitive skin.
BIKINI LINE BLASTER Want to wave goodbye to the plucked chicken look? Intense pulsed light (IPL) removal is ideal for the bikini line, says Aculight trainer Fiona Goodey, because the hair tends to be relatively dark and coarse, and this responds well to IPL. IPL works by pulsing a combination of different light wavelengths on to the skin, disabling the hair follicle. Laser does the same trick using a single beam, but IPL can go in slightly closer to delicate bits. You can get virtually the equivalent of a Brazilian wax, says Fiona. Aculight costs from pounds 100 per treatment (0870 902 1616). If you want to keep your pins smoother for longer with the humble razor, soak in the bath or shower for a few minutes before shaving to make the hairs easier to cut. Keep the water hot enough to prevent goosebumps (youll never get a smooth shave over those and will irritate your skin trying) and always use a foaming gel, especially on easy to nick areas. A triple blade razor like Gillette Venus, pounds 5.49, makes it easier to get closer without cuts. Waxing is a longer-lasting option but its better as a long- term strategy than a one-off pre-holiday fix. If you usually shave, your legs wont stay smooth for long, as its impossible to get all the stubble out, says Michaeljohns Shavata Singh. The more you wax, the finer the hairs become, but you will still have regrowth for about a week in between waxes. A good at-home version is Nads No Heat Hair Removal, pounds 17.95. Lady Victoria Hervey likes it because theres no risk of burning.

London by Sheila OConnell British Museum Press, hb, pp96, 9.99 [pounds sterling] So its good to see the British Museum Press doing a bit of a PR job for the capital. Sheila OConnells anthology is a passionate and unashamed celebration of the city that moved William Wordsworth, the greatest of Romantic spirits, to some of his most sublime poetry. The book meanders through the city, taking in river and street via prints, engravings, watercolours, sketches and photographs–from the rural edges of Frank Auerbachs Primrose Hill to the despair of Gustave Dores poverty-stricken backstreets. There are, of course, some of the great works of art in here–from the likes of Turner and Whistler–but where the book seems to really make its mark is in the helpful accompanying text. Normally, when a books raison detre is the display of visual images you can assume that the words were added as an afterthought, but here the text is often genuinely fascinating. For example, were you aware that the invention of the washing machine is responsible for Chinatowns location? As we all know, it was the good Dr Johnson who said that a man bored with London is a man bored with life. But of course, he didnt live in the 21st-century version of the metropolis. Today, its all too easy to become bored with London, but this book serves as a reminder of why you shouldnt.

Self-Acceptance How can we accept ourselves just the way we really are in the moment, especially when it seems obvious that we need to change? For some of us, depending on our childhood and other programming, self-acceptance may feel like giving up striving for a better life. It may feel like over-indulging or coddling ourselves or even denying what it is we need to change in our lives. My definition of self-acceptance is: My ability to accept myself in the moment, with compassion and without self-criticism, self-evaluation or self-judgment.

Whatever the parents attitude toward their childs spiritual aspirations, spirituality is an unavoidable issue in every family: the question of his or her origin, which every child asks, essentially pertains to spirituality.

According to Erik Erikson, trust “born of care is, in fact, the touchstone of the actuality of a given religion.” Erikson uses the term “religion,” but his insight about care and trust can easily apply to spirituality in general. While there is no formula for a healthy spiritual life, caring parents will, by inspiring a fundamental sense of trust and by respecting the spiritual aspects of birth, enable their children to freely develop a sense of spirituality and manifest it through a passionate and fulfilling involvement in life. Declaring that spirituality affirms childrens humanity and enhances their ability to understand lifes mysteries, Robert Coles advises parents to encourage a childs natural sense of wonderment and curiosity about spiritual issues. By their nature, children ask probing questions, and this desire to know, Coles affirms, “is also part of the moral development of children–a way for them to find a set of beliefs and ideals to guide their daily lives, a way for them to gain command of their behavior.”

Q: I was involved in a car accident last night. I havent been to the doctor, although my neck is still very stiff I dont want to go to a solicitor. Can I sue for personal injury on my own? A: You can act for yourself in a personal injury action for less than L1000 in value. However, you must produce medical evidence to prove your case, so it is imperative you go to your GP immediately. You could also act for yourself if the injury was less than 1000 but it would not be treated as a small claim. Solicitors costs would be recoverable if you lost.
Personal Injuries follows The Laws of Our Fathers, which Turow completed in 1996. His latest novel is set in the fictional Kindle County, which has much of the atmosphere and many attributes of Chicago, the city in which Turow and his wife practice law. The IRS has located a bank account into which large amounts of money have been deposited by those associated with a small law firm. The account appears to be a device to hide income, and the IRS immediately puts the pressure on Robbie Feaver, one of the two partners in the firm. The real problem for Feaver began when the IRS agents opened his front door to let in U.S. Attorney Stan Sennett, who had an entirely different goal than tax recovery on his mind. That is when George Mason got involved. Mason was an attorney who had an office in the same building where Feavers firm had its offices. Mason becomes the voice of the novel as Feavers attorney for the defense of the tax fraud charges. The story is told largely from his point of view as he attempts to help Feaver through what becomes a complicated hodgepodge of personal relationships, schemes, double-dealing, subterfuge and, ultimately, death. It seems the U.S. Attorney is interested in leveraging the potential tax charges against Feaver to force Feavers cooperation in a sting operation. The target of the sting is Feavers law partners uncle, the chief judge of the local court. U.S. Attorney Sennett believes there is widespread corruption in the courts. Feaver confirms that he has been involved in a system by which he can influence the outcome of cases favorably. The system involves giving money to various people who work for different judges, and the belief is that some of the money in each case makes its way to the chief judge.
Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.

Theres no place like home, Dorothy said. Anywhere I hang my hat is home, goes the old Johnny Mercer standard. Both are true and both are different. Home is one particular place, not like any other, and home is a feeling that can be created many times in many places. But before the utopian future arrives when all design recognizes these realities, were here trying to make a home. MS is very likely to change a familys requirements–starting with the urgent need to save energy for the good stuff. At the same time, finances may be pinched and options limited. Still, the questions are nearly universal. Can your home be safer? Can cleaning it be easier? Do adaptations have to look medical or threaten to devalue property? Do they have to cost the earth? The National MS Society would like to be your ally as you work out your own answers to these questions. We have some helpful publications–in print and on the Web site. We also think there is much to be gained from sharing information with each other. And wed like to remind everyone that occupational therapists (OTs) are the specialists who know the most about practical changes at home or work to meet needs imposed by MS. Ask your physician for a referral.

Sir: The risks of unregulated and irresponsible alternative medicine are rightly highlighted in your report of the article in the New England Journal of Medicine (”Alternative medicine a health risk, say experts”, 17 September). The public may be unaware that in many areas the evidence base for orthodox medicine is non-existent, and the potential for harm substantial. The evidence base for medical homeopathy is far from complete. However, one example of the many supportive studies is as follows. Of a group of 506 outpatients at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital with a range of conditions including back pain, arthritis and allergies, 81 per cent improved with regard to their main problem and 80 per cent in their overall well-being. Of the 300 who were on conventional drugs at the outset, two- thirds reduced or stopped them.
MORE MENUS OFFERING HEALTHFUL ALTERNATIVES From fast-food outlets to elegant fine-dining establishments, lighter, more nutritious menu alternatives have graduated from fad to standard fare, as operators across the food-service spectrum react to the nations growing awareness that proper nutrition and good health are irrefutably linked. I dont think you can cook today like you did in the 1960s, noted Culinary Institute of America president Ferdinand Metz, a staunch advocate of more healthful food preparations. Restaurant operators must address the subject of proper nutrition now. At least some of that responsibility lies with the industry.

GREAT food, cheap wine and an unspoilt landscape make France the most popular destination with Britons for short breaks and longer holidays. JACQUI THAKE takes a trip through the countryside of Limousin. AS we planned the morning hike across the countryside of Limousin our French hostess urged us: “Make sure you wear your baskets.” Confusion turned to hilarity when we realised that baskets in French meant trainers. Anyway, suitably booted for our expedition round the magnificent Lac du Causse in the Couze Valley, we set off in high spirits as the sun had come out at last.
Limousine has diverse meanings, from an inhabitant of the region around Limoges, once called Limousin, and which in the 18th century was looked at askance as home to “an old barbarous French, formerly brought into this country out of France”. The OED overlooks the limousine which was a cloak worn by the driver of a cart whose passenger section was shielded from the elements - hence the vehicle itself and all those gaudy, dark- windowed successors which could house nine cows.

Each year approximately 4 million Americans are bitten by dogs, and about 800,000 of these persons (44 percent of whom are younger than 14 years) present for medical treatment.(1-3) More than one dozen fatalities related to dog bites occur each year in this country; most of these victims are children.(1,2) Although most dog bite attacks are not provoked,(3) there are several measures that adults and children can take to decrease the possibility of being bitten. Family physicians can educate parents and children on ways to prevent dog bites, but, when dog bites do occur, the physician must be knowledgeable about how to treat the bites effectively. As of 1994, an estimated 34 million American households owned at least one dog, accounting for a canine population in the United States in excess of 55 million.(1,2,4) Most dogs never bite a human; however, under certain circumstances, any dog is capable of inflicting harm. The most common victims of dog bites are children, especially in incidents that prove fatal.(2,5-7) Almost one half of all reported cases of dog bites involve an animal owned by the victims family or the victims neighbors.(3) Most victims are involved in normal, nonprovoking activities before the dog attacks.(2) For example, neonatal deaths resulting from a dog bite most often involve a sleeping baby.(1,2) Several dog breeds have been identified for their role in fatal dog bite attacks, including pit bull breeds, malamutes, chows, Rottweilers, huskies, German shepherds and wolf hybrids.(1,2,8) From 1979 to 1988, pit bull breeds accounted for more than 41 percent of dog bite-related fatalities, three times as many as German shepherds.(2)
Bonn - A dachshund named Cindy has appeared in court in Krefeld, accused of mauling a neighbours parrot, Tapsi. The birds cage was produced in court to determine if the dog could have thrust its muzzle through the bars to attack the bird. Cindys owner, Sonja Juetten, denies her dog could could have hurt Tapsi, saying it must have been a cat. AFP
Avoiding Dog Bites Most dogs will never bite anyone. However, any dog may bite if it feels threatened. Children are the most common victims of dog bites. Infants and young children should never be left alone with a dog.

TIME HAS run out for a well-known Manhattan gallery owner who has been charged with forging works by numerous post-Impressionist and Impressionist painters and selling them to unsuspecting buyers around the world. His racket extended from New York to London, Tokyo, Paris and Taipei. Prosecutors alleged that Ely Sakhai, a dealer who runs the Art Collection Inc gallery on Broadway in lower Manhattan, with scamming his customers for years. He faces eight charges of fraud that could carry sentences of 20 years each. He was freed yesterday on $1m (pounds 555,000) bail.
THE BIGGEST sale of Impressionist and modern art to be held in Britain in a decade is expected to make more than pounds 50m later this month. Four Picassos, two Renoirs, a late Monet and a Modigliani that was once owned by the Guggenheim gallery but controversially sold 10 years ago, are among the works which will be auctioned by Sothebys in London on 21 June. Melanie Clore, head of the Impressionist and modern art department at Sothebys, said many sales had one great work in them but that this sale was distinguished by a number of really good pictures.

its sixth full-year loss in seven years as it unveiled a 32.55bn yen ($266m) loss in the first half. Without a 76bn yen charge on its plunging investments in banks and other securities, Nissan would have remained in the black, analysts said.
Nissans success has been celebrated in Parliament. Houghton and Washington MP Fraser Kemp highlighted the car firms success by putting down a motion in the House of Commons. He said: I welcome the fact 4.5 million cars have been built in Sunderland and that Nissan employs 4,500 people. Several new ranges have been added to the manufacturers production line and I welcome that one in every five cars built last year in the UK was built in the Sunderland Nissan factory.
Nissan is looking to North America for short-term relief from the Asian flu. “A major goal of Nissans plan to reform its business operations globally is a resurgence of its business in the United States,” says Minoru Nakamura, president of Nissan North America in Torrance, California, who also has served as president of the Tokyobased parent company since October. One way the company will both weather the regional economic storm and become more globally competitive is by rationalizing model designs, Nakamura says. Nissan will reduce its 25 basic vehicle platforms to 14 by 2001 and then to 10 by 2003.

“The merger between the medicine and beauty worlds began when beauty treatments stopped relying solely on products,” says Stephen Kee of the Saks range of hair and beauty salons. “Instead, they began to integrate medical procedures, like laser work. As this happened, customers started to see the therapist in a more serious light. In turn, therapists began to train in techniques that were once the preserve of the surgery, such as red vein removal, or bring doctors and nurses into the salon to carry out these and other treatments, such as collagen or Botox injections, on their behalf.” This cross-pollination of industries works both ways. Tomorrow sees the launch of Vitace, the first widely available own-brand range from a British dermatologist, in this case Dr Patrick Bowler, a Botox specialist. In the States, it is already commonplace to use products developed by your dermatologist. There is even a factory hidden in the bowels of the Midwest that produces generic skincare products on to which dermatologists can stick their own labels so patients think they have done their time in the laboratory. On the other side of the fence, both the Prada and Manifesto skincare ranges are examples of a new trend in the cosmetics industry for medically inspired labelling and packaging. Increasingly, spas and salons offer a range of orthodox medical tests and even treatments alongside the traditional menu of wraps and facials. Saks, for example, offers physiotherapy (pounds 45 per hour) and food intolerance testing (pounds 250), and will soon launch hormonal testing. At Champneys, the renowned health spa, you can book a mammogram (price on application), a cervical smear (from pounds 70 with a breast examination) and ECG heart testing (pounds 60) as additional treatments during your stay. Luxury health spas Henlow Grange, Springs and Forest Mere are set to follow suit with their own on-site wellwoman programmes. Even Boots is launching instore salons that offer pampering treats alongside medical treatments such as osteopathy, physiotherapy and even counselling.

At prenatal classes, expert nurses inform you of what to expect. Each stage of labour, along with the emotions involved, is outlined. The labour at the beginning of life. Sure as taxes, the pain will come. Life is proceeding as it should. There is a beginning and a progression. Just around the stage called transition is the hardest part, the pressure, the wish to stop or the choice to push forward. They may tell you not to push. You may hold back, against gravity, and against Mother Nature. Resisting. We have an opportunity to start in pre-dialysis clinics. We teach. We support. We try to maximize understanding and optimize good health. End stage renal failure will come. Planning for this phase can be as natural as planning any life event. Then there is the labour of beginning treatment. A patient and family undergo major shifts in lifestyle. Crises come and, hopefully, dissipate.

In the primary mortgage market, lender loan pipelines continued to fill with unsalable or unprofitable loans; lenders began slashing loan production, tightening underwriting guidelines and eliminating loan programs altogether. Nevertheless, many warehouse lenders terminated mortgage bankers credit lines. These mortgage bankers went out of business because they could not sell the loans and lacked the capital to internally fund these loans. Even Countrywide Financial Corporation, Calabasas, California, whose mortgage banking division is arguably the most successful mortgage bank in the history of U.S. mortgage finance, stunned investors by tapping an entire $11.5 billion credit line. It also accepted a $2 billion strategic investment from rival Bank of America, Charlotte, North Carolina, because it was having difficulty selling short-term debt to fund new mortgages. Unlike U.K. and European mortgage funding, which relies on retail bank deposits and covered mortgage bonds issued by mortgage lenders themselves, U.S. mortgage funding relies heaviest on securitization. Retail deposits and Federal Home Loan Bank advances are important but secondary long-term funding sources. Short-term warehouse lines of credit are also critical to many mortgage lenders selling loans into the secondary market.
INTRODUCTION Stability and impressive growth rates have been the key Armenian economic characteristics of recent years (see Table 1). Under these conditions the demand for housing has expanded and can be expected to continue to grow. The Central Bank of Armenia (CBA), the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE), and the private banking sector all recognize the need for improved mortgage finance services to augment this demand. They see the commercial and development opportunities that development of mortgage lending entails. In recent months there has been an impressive degree of discussion and planning about how to undertake this improvement, as evidenced by the frequent articles in the news media on trends and development and the preparation of concept papers by the CBA and MoFE. This is the appropriate time, therefore, for a systematic analysis of how private mortgage lending can develop in Armenia. This article summarizes the results of such an analysis. The analysis was prepared as the response of KfW (Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau) to a request from the Government of Armenia to develop the concept for mortgage market development, building on the work already done by Armenian experts.

John Osbornes first play, Look Back in Anger, had its premiere in 1956 and he called it a formal, old-fashioned play. His second play, The Entertainer, was set during the Suez Crisis and opened in 1957. What was new about both was that the characters were real working-class people. No real parts had been written about working- class characters before - only “cheeky chappy” roles such as Doolittle in Pygmalion. When asked if I wanted to go to see The Entertainer I was uncertain. Why? I had worked backstage on a brilliant amateur production (by the Tavistock Rep) in 1969 and it had stayed in my mind, with few productions since to affect the fond memories. How wrong I was to hesitate. For me this production, under Sean Holmess direction, ticks all the boxes and putting it on 50 years after it was set is brilliant timing. So much of it resonates in 2007: a misguided war in the Middle East and young men dying needlessly; the obsession with skinny/size zero women; fading performers (or “personalities”) trying to reinvent themselves; feelings against politicians of either party; comments about the Poles and the Irish; and confusion over national identity.

Competing against the big box retailers is a challenge for Kansas small-town businesses, but state programs can help their owners work toward success. “There are so many challenges that face small mom-and-pop or individual business owners,” said Jeanne Stinson, state coordinator for the Kansas Main Street Program. “Theyre faced with huge competition from the big box stores and most of them, I think, in Kansas have learned to live with that competition. Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. Who is doing this work and making sure that its adequately funded, that they have the ability to do their advertising and to make assistance to businesses.”

Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.
Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

What an intriguing issue! It seems the world does have its problems, but nothing that switching to soy-based ink wont cure. For example, one of your quoted experts, Red Cavaney in this case, cites U.S. undiscovered reserves at 131 billion barrels. Maybe Mr. Cavaney got help from [ESP researcher] Karl Zener with his estimated total, because U.S. oil companies were not so psychic. Despite a 60-percent drilling increase in 2001, they gained only a 2-percent increase in output. But lets say Mr. Cavaneys clairvoyance is on the money. He also stated that the world could last until 2030 without running out of oil. But the United States currently uses 20 million barrels per day. If we could bring all of Mr. Cavaneys 131 billion barrels online tomorrow (instead of the six years it takes to go online after discovery), they would last us 6,550 days, or nearly 18 years, which would be 2023, not 2030. And thats assuming current rates of consumption, meaning that the only way to grow the economy would be to completely offset growth with efficiency so as to keep consumption steady, as well as the ability to extract 100 percent of the oil, which isnt economically feasible. Besides, no ones saying were out of oil. Being at the peak means having consumed half the total. The rub comes as constantly increasing consumption bumps up against increased pumping and refining difficulties, until the oil in the ground is worth less than it would cost to get it out of the ground.

AbdominoplastyAlso known as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat in the abdominal area is removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened.
Business Editors/Health/Medical Writers LAKE FOREST, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–April 22, 2004 Study Finds ON-Q PainBuster Reduces Pain and Helps Patients Return to Their Normal Lives Faster Following Outpatient Abdominoplasty Surgery
From UAB Hospital (University of Alabama at
Birmingham) in Birmingham, Ala., Dr. John Anastasatos will perform an
abdominoplasty on a patient who has undergone a gastric bypass procedure.

Commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck,” Dr. Anastasatos says the results of
the abdominoplasty go beyond the physical recontouring of the body. “Taking
care of that not only changes their body but has a very potent
psychological effect. It changes the way they view themselves, it changes
the way they take care of themselves afterwards, meaning they are much more
diligent about maintaining what they so eagerly awaited and put a lot of
effort to get to that point.”

UAB Hospital has performed a high volume of abdominoplasty procedures and
is now treating patients from around the country. Surgeons utilize every
safety measure and employ techniques that allow them to perform an
abdominoplasty with improved cosmetic results and a shorter recovery
period.

Many of the old rules and limitations no longer apply to this new form of marketing, which seeks to talk with, rather than at, the reader. At last count, the Internet links some 46,318 computer networks at sites in 91 countries worldwide. More than half (27,614) the networks are in the United States; not surprisingly, some 20% of these are in California. According to the Internet Domain Survey, conducted in January 1995 by Net Wizards, some 4,852,000 host computers were linked to the Internet. The greatest percentage of these computers were being used in business (27%) and education (23%). The Internet Society estimates an average of 10 users per host. Total users on the net are approaching 50 million, with another million or so getting connected monthly.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.

What odds an action replay?
Introduction This article, the first in a series of four on granite working, deals with granite as a material, an industry, and a product and begins the description of the granite quarrying process. The second article will complete the account of granite quarrying. The final two articles concern the process of finishing granite and will conclude with a discussion of power sources, toolmaking, patents, granite workers, labor unions, and safety and health issues. The four articles will appear in consecutive issues of The Chronicle. Granite is a very common stone found world-wide. Granite has been commercially quarried in the United States, Canada, Scotland, Finland, Italy, Ukraine, India, China, and Africa. Granite is found throughout the United States and has been commercially exploited in every New England state (Figure 1). Granite is composed primarily of quartz and feldspar with smaller amounts of mica. Quartz contributes to granites strength, hardness, and luster, and acts as a cement binding all the elements together. Feldspar, granites principal ingredient, occurs in a number of forms, mostly sodium/aluminum/silicon-rich plagioclase and potassium-rich microcline. In addition to contributing to strength and hardness, feldspar primarily determines granites color, resistance to discoloration and decay, and ability to receive a polish. Mica (mostly white muscovite and black biotite) is present in much smaller amounts. The relative amounts of white and black mica are an important factor in both the color and commercial value of the granite. If white mica predominates, the granite will be light-colored, and if the black predominates, the granite will be dark, often approaching black. If the white and black occur in roughly equal amounts, the granite will be speckled. Since mica does not polish well nor does it retain its luster, excessive amounts of mica decrease the commercial value of granite. As an example, granite of the Barre, Vermont, area contains 31.7 percent plagioclase feldspar, 26.4 percent microcline feldspar, 23.3 percent quartz, 6.4 percent muscovite mica, 4.5 percent biotite mica, 2.7 percent orthoclase, 2.1 percent chlorite, and 1.6 percent calcite.

A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.
A Saskatchewan-based grain brokerage consulting firm is believed to be the first in Western Canada and perhaps the world to make such extensive use of the Internet to market grain for farmers. CGF Brokerage and Consulting of Saskatoon employs qualified graders who analyze grain samples from farmers and grade those samples based on Canadian Grain Commission standards. This detailed information is posted on the Internet along with digital photos of the bin run grain sample, the cleaned sample and the dockage. (See example shown at right.)
E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet!

The following article was originally published in The Daily Record, Baltimore, a sister publication. BALTIMORE - A new federal bankruptcy law has not cut the number of bankruptcy cases, according to a study by lawyers and credit counselors. The law, aimed at eliminating abuse of the bankruptcy system, requires debtors to seek financial counseling before filing for bankruptcy.
(This article originally ran in The Daily Record, Rochester, NY, another Dolan Media publication). A proposal now being considered by the U.S. Senate would impose new liability standards and regulations on debtors attorneys in bankruptcy cases. If these standards become law, they could impact many debtors bankruptcy attorneys, along with attorneys who work for programs funded by Legal Services Corp. or other legal aid programs, and attorneys who provide pro bono bankruptcy representation. The new measure, which is similar to legislation that was approved by the House of Representatives last year, H.R. 975/S. 1920, would require debtors attorneys to:

The demand for more education and real people to share their experiences with plastic surgery has grown incredibly all over the world, explained Dr. Mayer, co-director with Richard Fleming, M.D. of the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. We are excited to participate in a show like Cosmetic Surgery Live, which takes the epicenter of beauty (LA) to the United Kingdom. Dr. Mayer will perform a new FDA-approved procedure called the ENDOTINE Cheek Lift which is ideal for patients ages 35-50 who are not looking for a radical makeover, but a more understated rejuvenation that brings them back 7-10 years. With its five points of contact and absorbable features, the new ENDOTINE device gives patients natural, long-lasting results. It also enhances cheek volume - key to obtaining a more youthful appearance. During a cheeklift procedure using ENDOTINE, a half-inch incision is made inside a crows foot alongside the lower eye. Once the underlying muscle and tissue has been elevated to lift the cheek area, the new ENDOTINE Mid Face is placed to capture and elevate the cheek, securing it into the bone and holding it in position until the soft tissue re-adheres to the cheek bone entirely. The ENDOTINE gradually absorbs completely, at which time the tissue is securely attached to the cheekbone lifting the mid-face.

– with some visiting 10 or more — points to the huge timesaving benefits
that a truly full-featured online travel planning site can deliver,” said
Jim Quilty, vice president of travel and tourism at Harris Interactive.

As a travel review
aggregator , Kango has aggregated and analyzed more than 20 million
traveler opinions from more than 1,000 sites across the Web. The service
uses natural language analysis and travel-specific term mapping to deliver
reliable, relevant recommendations based on consumers exact requirements
and preferences. This means users can now include subjective criteria like
romantic or relaxing, or objective criteria like price and internet
access and get relevant results. For instance, Kango users looking for a
romantic getaway in San Francisco will get different hotel and
activity results than those looking for a family friendly vacation in San Francisco . Kango also understands
consumers intent regardless of the terminology they use, so good for
kids is interpreted the same way as child friendly or family vacation.
The result is a travel search application that helps travelers discover new
travel choices and make better decisions.

Martha M. Doss, of Lexington, Virginia, writes, “When I finish cleaning up, I put the wet and soapy sponge (no metal on it, of course) on a paper towel in the microwave for one minute on HIGH. When its done, I use the wet paper towel to clean the microwave oven, which kills two birds with one shot. The sponge is now clean, and the oven is clean and odor free.”
